Objective
Certain people, some of which presenting a mental handicap, decided to participate together in cultural or other leisure activities. Their purpose is to create occasions to meet each other in a warm and friendly way without any hierarchy, providing recreation and mirth.

Le Silex aims to:
- offer every person the rights and access to freely chosen leisure activities
- recognize the place of persons with a handicap in society
- offer these persons help in order to affirm them in their rights on autonomy; proclaim and defend their rights.

Activities
The house of Le Silex in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert permits to organize different activities: meals, thematic evenings, training workshops, informative meetings or gatherings to discuss. Le Silex also offers cultural trips, performances, excursions, walks, holidays and a lot of other outside activities that encourage integration.

Working
The activities are organized by 7 professional animators and more than 80 volunteers, of which some twenty youngsters manage the activities for members between 18 and 30 years old in particular. Le Silex is recognized and subsidized as a movement for permanent education and a centre for creativity and expression. It is also recognized by the French Community, the Brussels-Capital Region and the commune of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.

Human needs of Le Silex
Volunteers are welcome for traditional meals on Thursday, cultural trips, promenades, cinema or bowling. Volunteers can contact Bernadette de Mûelenaere.
People between 18 and 30 years old can participate in a team of youngsters organizing activities such as karaoke, dinner-parties, going out, cinema, bowling, sports, weekends, holidays.

Financial needs of Le Silex
Le Silex receives subsidies, but these cover only a part of its expenses, namely the salaries of the professional animators, the maintenance staff, a secretary and two coordinators. For this reason, every year Le Silex organizes a big selling event of Christmas trees and other Christmas articles with the cooperation of some 200 volunteers.

Gifts are welcome to pay the renovation and maintenance costs, the costst of minibus, the purchase of other materials and the adaptation of the premises to older participants.
